About me…
My journey with dogs began in 1987 when I received Chipper, my first Cocker Spaniel, a gentle, loyal soul who opened my heart to the unwavering companionship only a dog can give. Since that moment, I can hardly remember a day without a dog by my side. Then, in 1992, my life changed forever when I met my first Shiba Inu, sparking a love for the spirited, independent Japanese breed that has become part of my identity.
Stepping into the ring with my grandmother’s Miniature Pinscher, Corkie, and our English Pointer, Cody, I fell in love with the thrill and grace of showing dogs. But when I entered with my first Shibas, it was as though I found my true calling. These fox-like, independent creatures—with their ancient lineage and steadfast spirit—held a depth and mystery that captivated me in a way no other breed ever could. GenGen and Kato, my first two Shibas in Michigan, embodied this rare spirit, and they will always hold a sacred place in my heart, for they are where my love story with Shibas began.
In 1996, my grandmother, with her adventurous heart, began breeding the rare Kai Ken, another remarkable Japanese breed. I was honored to become co-owner, handler, and trainer of top-winning Kai Ken, Shibas, and even Siberian Huskies. Though I admired the Siberian’s boundless energy and lust for life, my soul was always drawn back to Japanese breeds—their quiet dignity, their fierce loyalty, their ancient wisdom.
In 2006, I met my husband, Brett, who has been incredibly supportive of my love of dogs. Together, we built a life that continues to revolve around our passion for canines. That same year, I moved from Michigan to New Mexico, carrying my memories of those beloved Japanese breeds with me, a constant reminder of their enduring presence in my life.
When I married, my grandmother gifted us a Shiba as a wedding present, a gesture of love and legacy that brought Kimber into our lives. Kimber reignited my love for the ring, and with every moment we shared, my bond with the Shiba breed grew deeper. After returning to Michigan in 2018, it was clear that my life was meant to include more Shibas. I joyfully adopted my grandmother’s last two Shibas, a cherished connection to her and a reminder of our shared love for these incredible dogs.
Then, in 2024, my dream came true: I imported Anastasia, a striking black-and-tan Shiba from Poland. Watching her grow, training together, and stepping into the ring fills me with a joy that’s hard to put into words. Anastasia is a part of my heart, just as every Shiba before her has been.
Brett and I have combined our shared passion for dogs into Hoshi Ken Photography, capturing the beauty, grace, and spirit of these incredible animals. Through our work, we aim to preserve the moments that define a lifetime of devotion to the breeds we love.
I look forward to the next 35 years with the breed that holds my soul, my heart, and my purpose. The Shiba Inu—and all Japanese breeds—are not just dogs to me; they are partners, guides, and reminders of a love that has become timeless.
